FAQs

What is RiverCalc?

RiverCalc is an Apple app by PokerTech that helps analyze Texas Hold'em poker hands. This odds calculator provides an easy way to determine the odds associated with your hand when played against up to five opponents.

Having at least a rough idea of your Win/Lose/Tie odds as well as the odds that your hand will improve on the flop, turn, and river, is critical to developing a winning Hold’em strategy.

The odds provided include Win/Loses/Tie odds for your hand, the odds that your best hand will attain a particular rank (‘Two Pair’, ‘Flush’, etc.), as well as the odds that your hand will attain any of the full list of possible ranks, on the Flop, Turn, and River.

This app uses the Monte Carlo simulation method to calculate the odds. The Monte Carlo method uses either 10,000 or 50,000 decks. More decks are more accurate but take longer to calculate.

Yes, see below, or see the help screens on the app:

> To start, press the ‘You’ button, which is ‘Player 1’ (always select a player before selecting cards).

> Select a card by first pressing one of the ‘Card Value’ buttons (A,2,3,….,K), then select one of the ‘Suit’ buttons.

> Repeat to select the second card for your hand.

> The status indicator should change from Red to Green when you have a complete and valid hand.

> Next, press the ‘Player 2’ button.

> Repeat the selection process for ‘Player 2’.

> At a minimum, your hand (‘You’) and ‘Player 2’ must be complete and the status indicators must be Green to enable a calculation to be made.

> Hands for players 3-6 are optional.

> Repeat the selection process for additional players if used.

> Selecting cards for the Board is optional.

> The Board requires 0, 3, or 4 cards (Pre-flop, Turn, River). Indicator will be Green when the Board is valid.

> To compute the odds, press the ‘Calculate’ button. The 'Calculate' button will be Green when ready to calculate, Red when not ready (check indicators lights).

> ‘Clear/Reset’ Button: Clears all cards and odds, also reset the ‘Fast or Accurate’ setting back to ‘Fast’.

> ‘Back/Delete’ Button: Deletes the rightmost ‘value’ or ’suit’ entry for the selected player/board.

> To edit a hand or the Board, first select the Board or hand, then use the ‘Back/Delete’ button to delete the unwanted card/cards and then select new card/cards.

> 'Fast/Accurate' button: press to select either the fast mode (Red) or the accurate mode (Green). The accurate mode is more accurate but takes 5 times longer to calculate. [ Monte Carlo method uses either 10,000 or 50,000 deck simulation ]

Note: there is a slight delay for the color to change when the button is pressed.

The main screen shows odds for ‘Best Hand’, while the second screen shows odds for any hand. ‘Best Hand’ is the highest ranking that your hand has. For example, Quads includes Trips, 2 Pair, 1 Pair, and High Card. The main screen will only show odds for Quads, while the second screen shows odds for all possible hands for the flop, turn, and river, and includes odds for the board pairing.

Board Pairs:

How pairs on the board are handled can vary when calculating odds. When you say 'you' have a pair, do pairs on the board count since they are shared. For this calculator, board pairs are not included in the 'any hand' odds on the second screen for 'Pair' and '2 Pair'. However, board pairs are included in the 'Best Hand' odds on the first screen.

Ties:

Unlike other calculators, the 'Win' and ‘Lose' odds do not included 'Tie' odds, which are completely separate. Other calculators divide up the 'Tie' odds between "Win' and 'Lose'.
